Turning a Green Salad in to a Meal

Salads are great side dishes, but they can also make excellent main courses, particularly for a lighter meal. Doing this can most easily be done by adding a bit of protein. Here are a couple of ideas.
  1. Leftovers
    • Beans - northern, pinto, chickpea, black, etc.
    • Chicken
    • Steak
    • Fish
    • Potatoes
    • Pork
    • Lamb
  2. Staples
    • Tuna Fish
    • Crab Meat
    • Nuts
  3. Other
    • Beets
    • Corn
Salad can be a lot of fun and it offers a lot of opportunities for improvisation. It's worth trying to match the main items you are adding to the salad with the dressing you are using. If you have a very flavorful addition, like fish, bacon or steak, you might want to try going with a milder dressing. For things like nuts, potatoes and beans, you can go with a much stronger dressing. This helps balance out the salad.

Additional salad garnishes are limitless. Anything from fruit to crackers, cheese to meat can be used to add to a salad. Take a look in the refrigerator and start trying things out. In no time you will be having fun making new salads every night.
